Known for his boundary-pushing approach to music and storytelling, he has become one of the most influential and creative voices in modern experimental music and visual art. His first release on the Brainfeeder label was a stormy EP, described as bombastic, exotic and utterly unique. Flying Lotus first gained recognition with his 2006 debut album, 1983, but it was with Los Angeles (2008) and Cosmogramma (2010) that he became a leader in the LA beat scene. Cosmogramma combined jazzy improvisation with cosmic textures, and is rightly considered one of the greatest electronic albums of all time. Later albums such as Until the Quiet Comes (2012) and You're Dead! (2014) showed his expansion and ambition. You're Dead!, a concept album about the afterlife, featured appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, and Herbie Hancock, and is considered a modern classic.
